BALLETT

Floating across the stage in a tutu, doing a splitsault through the air or dancing with real pointe shoes. This is the dream of many girls, but also boys. Did you know that ballet is one of the oldest dance forms?

Already 500 years ago there were the first ballet performances in Italy and a little later in France. Caterine de' Medici, a princess from the Italian province of Urbino, is said to have brought ballet to France. For the first time, there was such a thing as choreography, meaning that the dancers had a plan for when they would do which movement. That was new. The dance floor was also limited.

Only aristocratic, that is, distinguished men were allowed to dance at that time. One of the biggest fans of ballet, was the Sun King Louis XIV, who even founded the first ballet school in the world in 1661. He himself loved to dance the role of the sun ;) The director of this school, Pierre Beauchamp, thought up not only many ballet figures, but also the five positions for the feet! Together with the composer and violinist Jean-Baptiste Lully and the actor and playwright Jean-Baptiste Molière, he invented the Comédie-ballet (ballet comedy). Music, dance, text, costumes and stage design were equally important. In the Sun King's school, girls were also allowed to take ballet lessons and became increasingly important for ballet. Especially in the Romantic period, when everything was supposed to look light and dreamy. The pointe shoes were also invented during this time, because if you dance on tiptoe, you look like you are floating. Female dancers were especially good at this.

At Rumpf you will find not only pointe shoes and tutus, but also beautiful leotards and fine tights in beautiful colors. Or check out the light skirts or cozy cuffs, which are especially important for the warm-up phase. We are looking forward to seeing you!
